Hello, Starters!

It is the beginning of a new month, and every fresh start reminds us that there's even more innovation ahead. What will the world of AI prepare for us in the coming weeks?

Here’s what you’ll find today:

  • Google DeepMind explores AI’s manipulation

  • Amazon Q is now generally available

  • Mustafa Suleyman weighs in on AI

  • Who’s the mind behind “gpt2-chatbot”?

  • Apple’s secret AI research lab

  • And more.

As AI is inherently trained on human data, it probably picks up some of our quirks. But what happens when it's not such a positive one? Research from Google DeepMind delves into the question to discover how successful AI can be with manipulation.

With the predominance of AI in our daily lives, technology is getting into situations that require decision-making. So, potential biases might lead human instructions to be interpreted negatively. For example, if the model suggests weight loss or calorie tracking, this might impact the user looking for health advice.

Embracing the ongoing trend of AI-powered enterprise solutions, Amazon has finally announced the general availability of "Amazon Q," its AI assistant from Amazon Web Services, designed to help companies with software development, report building, and querying internal data for analysis.

Although its benchmarks haven't been released yet, Amazon claims it's "the most capable AI-powered assistant for software development."

Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google DeepMind and now the CEO of Microsoft AI, recently discussed at TED2024 his vision of AI for the future, where he compared the technology to a "new digital species," a notion that might shock people, but it's a good representation of the impact AI is having on our society.

As the accuracy and performance of AI continue to develop, Suleyman explains that we'll see it as a digital companion and a trustworthy partner on the journey of our lives. This relates to the concept of AI agents, which have the potential to play a stellar role, similar to computers and smartphones.

Free SOC 2 Compliance Checklist from Vanta

Are you building a business? Achieving SOC 2 compliance can help you win bigger deals, enter new markets, and deepen trust with your customers — but it can also cost you real time and money.

Vanta automates up to 90% of the work for SOC 2 (along with other in-demand frameworks like ISO 27001, HIPAA, and GDPR), getting you audit-ready in weeks instead of months and saving you up to 85% of associated costs.

🕵️Reviews of the mysterious "gpt2-chatbot" model continue to arrive, leaving everyone shocked at how its capabilities are almost similar to GPT-4. However, there's still no clue where it came from, though suspicions are arising that OpenAI might have something to do with it, especially since Sam Altman posted about it on X.

🍎The Financial Times has revealed what appears to be Apple's biggest secret: an AI research lab in Zurich, where the company has allocated new staff presumably to develop AI products and models. It seems that the decision was made after Apple acquired some local AI startups.
